New at the Ralls County Library

Ms. Becca will be leaving the Birth to Age 5 group and headed back to the classroom this fall, so we have added a new member to our team. Dawn Snodgrass will be the new Birth to Age 5 team member along with Ms. Diane. She will start mid-August. Ms. Dawn is involved in the community so you probably know her already. We are excited to have her join us!

Notes From the Director

Hello August!

If July wasn’t busy enough, here comes August. This is the month to wrap up Summer Reading, prepare for the beginning of school, and find a new author or two to love! We can help you with that. The library is full of new releases, new authors and audio, ebooks or physical books for your literacy needs. Come see us! As the fall begins, so does the return of monthly adult craft nights. Watch Facebook, the website, this newsletter or signage in the library for more details. This fall will also bring a few new programming events from after-school events to Thursday night Family Events. As always, we want to meet your literacy needs so let us know how we can help you become a reader, return to being a reader or continue to be a reader.

Have a few questions, suggestions or comments, give me a call. My door is always open.

August  Birth to Age 5 Programming

Dawn Snodgrass & Diane Schulte

It is already August, and summer is winding down. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in this year's "Insects, Amphibians and Books...Oh My!" summer reading program. We hope you had as much enjoyment as we did!

August is going to be an exciting month with some changes. Please welcome Dawn Snodgrass, our new Birth to Five programmer. She is replacing Miss Becca, who has accepted another teaching position.

There will not be a Story Hour on August 8th, but on August 15th, the little ones can meet Miss Dawn, and she can get to know them. Our Birth to Five story hour activities will continue to focus on stories, painting, cutting, songs, and movement.

August Children/Youth (Grades Kdg-12) Programming

Dawn Hargraves

I’ve had so much fun exploring rocks, insects, amphibians, reptiles, trees, plants, mammals, butterflies, and flowers all summer with our wonderful community. I’ve enjoyed filling my nature journal and exploring with the kids in my home, and I hope all our families have as well. August will be a little different at the library. On the 8th we won’t have story hour, and we will only be doing AM story hours in August, but these story hours will be packed full of fun. On the 15th we will have a guest from our community bringing a project for our kids to create. That project will go into shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and travel all over the world. On the 22nd we will learn about Vincent Van Gogh and paint our own versions of Starry Night or Fishing Boats on the Beach. The 29th will be our screen free fun day. We’ll learn a new game and spend the hour playing games and visiting with friends. I can’t wait to see you all here at the library!

We have an exciting lineup of adult programs at the library this month! Now is a great time to join our new book club, where we’ll dive into the fantasy genre with Evie Woods’ The Lost Bookshop. On August 13th and 20th at 5:30pm, get creative with our sunflower wreath craft session, perfect for adding a touch of summer to your home. For pet lovers, our DIY pet enrichment toy craft will provide fun and stimulating activities for your furry friends on August 29th. Don’t miss our fairy tale-themed Saturday event on August 24th, featuring the enchanting board game “Grimm Masquerade,” where you can immerse yourself in a world of magic and mystery. Also, be watching for us at local Senior Events throughout the month. Come and be a part of our vibrant community!

"Clean Sweep" by Ilona Andrews is the first book in a series of novels that combine urban fantasy and science fiction. The series follows innkeeper Dina Demille as she protects her magical bed-and-breakfast from unknown threats. This book intertwines mystery, action, and romance with a richly developed world and intriguing characters such as a werewolves and vampires. It includes humor, a fast-paced plot with surprising turns, and skillfully blends the magic of a fantasy novel with the technology of science fiction. It is a fun read for enthusiasts of urban fantasy and science fiction.
